Holy Textiles!

There’s a hidden treasure on the campus of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in Morningside Heights. Tucked away inside the Gothic Revival Town building at the south crossing is the world-renowned Textile Conservation Laboratory. Inside the cavernous space, a team of conservators is not only restoring the cathedral’s historic tapestries, but will put their skilled hands to work on private collectors’ textiles, upholstery, needlepoint and costumes. So if your favorite textiles need a little TLC, you might want to make an appointment at the lab, and while you’re their make sure to stop by the restored nave of the Cathedral, which was recently reopened, eight years after a tragic fire almost destroyed it.
